We all know Spongebob and his friendly neighbors and friends and he has been around for decades. Sure he has been here with us on many TV channels all around the world, and there are plenty of fun Spongebob Squarepants toys, but his profile is a bit of mystery. And even though he has been cracking a smile on many children’s faces, how much do we actually know about Spongebob? Are ‘ya ready, kids?
Spongebob Squarepants is an American animated TV series, a comedy created by Stephen Hillenburg who is a marine science educator and an animator for Nickelodeon. The series explores daily adventures and endeavors of the title character and his friends who all live in the city of Bikini Bottom, at the bottom of the ocean.
Stephen Hillenburg was fascinated by oceans and marine life since he was a child, and that is why he decided to become a marine scientist. However, he also had an artistic side which he used for creating this magnificent character and one of the favorite TV series in the whole world.
Many of the ideas of the series originated in The Intertidal Zone, an unpublished education comic book. The creator started developing this character into the TV series in May 1996, but only in 1999 did Nickelodeon held a preview for the series. A few months later, in July 1999 Spongebob Squarepants officially premiered on Nickelodeon channel. This granted the series worldwide popularity which only kept growing.
Since it aired in July 1999, the show has since had 12 seasons, with the 13th still left to be aired in 2020. The first 5 seasons have 20 episodes, while the rest of them have 26 episodes, with the 9th being an exception with only 11 episodes. So in total, that is 251 episodes from 1999 until 2019.
Spongebob is voiced by Tom Kenny, a veteran voice actor. He previously worked with Hillenburg on Rocko’s Modern Life and when Hillenburg created Spongebob Squarepants, he asked Kenny to voice the main character. At first, Kenny was a voice actor in Rocko’s Modern Life for a minor background character, but Hillenburg insisted he becomes the voice of Spongebob. However, Kenny has forgotten how that character used to sound, but when Hillenburg played a video clip of the episode to remind Kenny about the voice, Kenny has made it!
No one is actually sure how old Spongebob Squarepants is. There have been posts about his age and fans noted that he has a driver’s license that states his date of birth – July 14th, 1986 – so in 2019, that makes him 33 years old. However, even though there is “evidence” of his age, no one can say for sure how old he is.
All we know that he is old enough to live on his own and have a job, but still goes to a boating school. The creator himself said that Spongebob has no specific age and that they “made” him go to school because Nickelodeon demanded that he goes to some sort of school.
According to the information provided, Spongebob Squarepants is only 4 inches tall. So, basically like a real-life sponge! Other physical attributes of his include blue eyes, “skin” color yellow with holes and he only weighs one ounce.
Besides Spongebob Squarepants, who is made to resemble a kitchen sponge, there are other characters – his friends. His best friend is Patrick Star who is a starfish. Spongebob also has a pet, who is a snail named Gary, but he meows like a cat. Another one of the characters is his first neighbor, Squidward Tentacles who is often grumpy and fed up with Spongbob’s strong energy and child-like behavior.
Spongebob works at the Krusty Krab, a fast-food restaurant whose owner is a red crab named Mr. Krabs. He talks like a sailor and is a bit stingy when it comes to money. Mr. Krabs has a teenage daughter who is a sperm whale named Pearl. Another one of the good friends of Spongebob is Sandy Cheeks, a thrill-seeking squirrel from Texas. She is very athletic and does karate and she lives in an oak tree entrapped in a clear glass dome, which is airtight to keep the air in and water out.
And just like any other TV show, there is a villain. However, this evil genius is small and his name is Plankton, who is in fact a one-eyed copepod. He has a computer-wife Karen and he runs a rival restaurant called the Chum Bucket. However, his business is unsuccessful and he is always trying to steal the secret recipe for the Krabby Patty from Mr. Krabs.
The show also includes Spongebob’s boat-driving teacher Mrs. Puff, who is a paranoid but patient pufferfish. She is very patient with him because he is one of her best students when it comes to classes, but as soon as he sits behind the wheel, he panics and crashes, causing Mrs. Puff to puffs up into a ball.
We all know that Spongebob lives in a pineapple under the sea, but do we know why? According to creators, Spongebob lives in a pineapple because they are a common motif in Polynesian crafts. Also, Hillenburg said that he thinks that Spongbob “would like the smell” of a pineapple home. This is because he knows that smell is a very important sense of all sea creatures.
If you’ve ever Googled Spongebob, you might have gotten a search suggestion that says Spongebob has died. However, the character himself didn’t die in the show, it was his creator, unfortunately. In 2017, Stephen Hillenburg was diagnosed with ALS, but he said he would work on the show for as long as he can. Unfortunately, he has died on November 29, 2018, at the age of 57, due to heart failure.
